Microsoft News uses polls to learn what's important to our audience, and to provide useful and meaningful content.

Here's how the polls work. We ask a series of questions on news of the day and other interesting topics. Real-time results displayed with poll questions reflect the responses of everyone who has taken the poll  but are not "scientific" or based on representative samples. Still, they can provide insights that are interesting, and sometimes surprising.

We also create statistically valid, "scientific" results by using profile responses to weight results based on demographic data and other mathematical models. Based on these insights, we and some of our partners create content that we publish on Microsoft News. We'll sometimes ask demographic questions, but no personally identifiable information is stored — people who vote in our polls are anonymous.

We work with CivicScience, which provides technology that powers many of our polls.
