On the mound: After struggling in his first two outings, RHP Merrill Kelly turned in his first good start of the spring, tossing four scoreless, hitless innings, walking two and striking out four. “I thought he was a lot more aggressive in the zone,” Diamondbacks pitching coach Mike Butcher said. “That’s the bottom line. He was attacking better this outing. I think he got his feet underneath him and started to exhale.” RHP Greg Holland gave up a run on a double and a single in his inning of work. After working mostly at 88-89 mph earlier in spring, he saw 90-91 mph on Sunday. LHP Marc Rzepczynski and RHP Jimmie Sherfy each threw scoreless innings.

Joseph is competing to be one of the three catchers the Diamondbacks are expected to carry on their roster this season.

Extra bases: RF Andrew Aplin made a strong throw from right for the second game in a row, this time firing to first after catching a deep fly ball to double off a baserunner in the first inning.

On the mound: RHP Matt Koch had his spring debut delayed by what was called “general arm fatigue,” but he has been sharp since getting into games. RHP Nick Green, the Rule 5 pick who is trying to win a bullpen spot, threw three innings and also allowed just one unearned run. RHP Braden Shipley tossed two scoreless innings, striking out four.
